The Scream Mug – Edvard Munch

About this piece

Edvard Munch's The Scream presents a lone figure standing on a bridge-like path, hands raised to its head beneath a fiery, undulating sky. Two smaller figures recede into the distance, while the fjord and shoreline curve around the foreground figure. The entire scene seems to vibrate with emotion: straight lines carry the viewer deep into the landscape, while the sky and water bend in sweeping waves. Munch developed this powerful motif during the 1890s and recreated it in paintings, drawings, and prints.
