The Mystic Marriage of St. Robert to Our Lady is a captivating painting by Giovanni Odazzi (1663–1731). In this artwork, the initiative is unmistakably Our Lady’s. She appears to have drawn Saint Robert upward toward herself, bestowing upon him an ineffable grace that binds him to her.
The painting is housed in the Chiesa di San Bernardo alle Terme in Rome. The composition captures the mystical union between St. Robert and the Blessed Virgin Mary, emphasizing her pivotal role as the original woman—the first woman in everyone’s life. Even before our biological mothers, Mary knew and loved each of us over 2000 years ago, from the moment of her Immaculate Conception. Her passionate love for every soul drove her to do everything within God’s will to save humanity. She desired and obtained all that was good for us, even before we existed.
This painting invites contemplation, revealing the profound connection between St. Robert and Our Lady—a union that transcends earthly bonds and draws us closer to the divine
Giovanni Odazzi was an Italian painter who lived from 1663 to 1731. He was born in Rome and is primarily known for his work during the late Baroque period. Odazzi was a pupil of the prominent painter Carlo Maratta, who was known for his classicist style.
Odazzi’s paintings often depicted religious and historical subjects. He was skilled at creating grand and ornamental compositions, incorporating rich colors, intricate details, and dramatic lighting effects. His works demonstrate a strong influence from the Baroque style, characterized by its emotional intensity, theatricality, and dynamic compositions.
Odazzi received numerous commissions from churches, palaces, and private patrons in Rome and other cities in Italy. Some of his notable works include frescoes in the Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone in Rome and altarpieces in the Chiesa del Gesù in Rome and the Cathedral of Palermo in Sicily.
While Odazzi’s work was highly regarded during his lifetime, his reputation has somewhat diminished over time. However, his paintings are still appreciated for their technical skill and the grandeur they bring to religious and historical subjects.
