The Fairytale Forest Mug – Edvard Munch

About this piece

Edvard Munch’s The Fairytale Forest turns a woodland walk into a scene that feels suspended between memory and dream. Figures move along a path among tall trunks, while flowing outlines and shifting greens make the trees appear almost alive. Munch explored this subject in several paintings, sketches, and later variations, drawing on memories of children and paths through the woods. The subject is gentler than some of Munch’s better-known scenes of anxiety, yet it shares his interest in making the surrounding landscape express an inner mood.
