About this piece

Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam is one of the most famous scenes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. The fresco presents a reclining Adam reaching toward God, who approaches surrounded by figures and billowing drapery. Their hands almost meet, making the small gap between two fingertips the emotional center of the enormous composition. Painted during the early sixteenth century, the scene is part of a larger program of images from the Book of Genesis.
