About this piece

Set beneath tall trees in a deep woodland clearing, In the Forest of Arden presents a gathering of figures in bright, old-fashioned clothing. The wooded setting and theatrical costume evoke the pastoral world of Shakespeare's As You Like It, in which characters leave the court and encounter new possibilities in the countryside. Painter John Collier was known for carefully modeled figures, literary subjects, and dramatic storytelling. Here the surrounding foliage does more than create a backdrop: its varied greens and browns frame the characters and draw attention to their interactions.
