About this piece
A lighthouse rises above dangerous waves in J. M. W. Turner's Bell Rock Lighthouse. Created in 1819, this dramatic watercolor imagines a storm battering the isolated tower off Scotland's eastern coast. The structure had been designed by engineer Robert Stevenson, who commissioned Turner to make an illustration for his account of its construction. Turner had not personally visited the location; he developed the scene from descriptions and his experience depicting the sea.
